Project
AWARE
Aquatic World Awareness,
Responsibility and Education
The Project AWARE Foundation is the dive industry’s leading
non-profit environmental organisation with offices located in 175
countries of the world.
It works in partnership with divers and water enthusiasts to combat
challenges facing underwater environments. These involve volunteers
in hands-on environmental activities like International Cleanup
Day and The International Whale Shark Project.
Project AWARE inspires conservation by incorporating its messages
in dive training materials and creating awareness through education
campaigns such as Protect the Sharks, Protect the Living Reef and
AWARE Kids to name just a few.
Island Divers is proud to be an Official Project Aware
Partner
We actively promote the work of Project Aware through regular
Project Aware weekends where people can become actively involved
in local and international initiatives. This also includes increased
focus on a number of Project Aware and PADI specialities such as:
AWARE
– Coral Reef Conservation Specialty Course
Targeted at divers, snorkelers and ocean enthusiasts, this course
includes an overview of coral reef ecology, a look at problems facing
reefs and practical guidelines on responsible interaction in these
fragile environments.
AWARE
– Fish Identification Specialty Course
This course introduces divers to the most common fish families in
temperate and tropical waters throughout the world. It emphasizes
the importance of Project AWARE and involves people in identifying
and recording local fish populations.
Peak
Performance Buoyancy Specialty Course
Divers learn to fine tune their buoyancy skills, helping to prevent
disturbance of underwater environments.
Project
AWARE Specialty Course
Divers and nondivers learn about the plight of aquatic ecosystems
and how they can help protect them. Current environmental issues
and the status of endangered underwater habitats are also explored.
Underwater
Naturalist Specialty Course
This course is an introduction to many types of aquatic life and
an overview of responsible human interactions. Students learn dive
techniques to help preserve underwater environments.

“We want to feel that our children, their children and
generations to come will be able to enjoy the underwater world that
has given us so much. There are so many significant problems facing
mankind, but as divers, this is truly our cause. If divers do not
take an active role in preserving the aquatic realm, who will?”
